UPDATE! Lady Wolves win 1st over Sunray
With a score 9-3, the Lady Wolves have won their 1st game of a 3 game series against Sunray. The Lafy Wolves will play the 2nd game of the series on Monday at 4 p.m. in Littlefield! Great job, Lady Wolves!
Facing New Deal in the bi-district round of the Class 2A state softball playoffs wasn’t a big deal for the Colorado High School Lady Wolves.
The Lady Wolves used the long ball and a dominating performance by pitcher Kaci Rivera to cruise to an easy 15-0 victory over the New Deal Lady Lions this past week. As a team, the Lady Wolves pounded out 15 hits, including three home runs, to ease past the Lady Lions and secure a berth in the Area round.
Rivera was almost untouchable in the pitching circle for Colorado City. She allowed just four baserunners in the contest. Overall, she retired 18 of the 22 batters she faced, including 13 via strike outs.
While Rivera was scattering three innings over five innings of work, Riley Johnson, Madison Sims and Mallory Kern were pounding the New Deal pitching staff unmercifully. The three accounted for seven of the Lady Wolves’ 15 hits and drove in nine of the team’s runs.
Johnson, who went 3-for-3 from the plate, touched the Lady Lions pitching staff for a home run, a triple and a game-high five runs batted in. Kern and Sims both went 2-for-3 with home runs and a pair of RBI.
Sheree Vanderpool, Rivera and Mia Monroe also turned in stellar outings at the plate for the Lady Wolves. Vanderpool went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored, while Rivera was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Monroe, a senior, drove in three runs by going 1-for-3 in the contest.
Lina Rivera, Taleya James and McKenna Lentz also registered hits for C-City in a game that was halted after five innings due to the 10-run rule.
The Lady Wolves jumped on New Deal early and often offensively. C-City scratched three runs in the bottom of the first and then tacked on additional runs in each of the next two innings en route to taking a 6-0 cushion into the fourth. In the bottom of the fourth, the CHS bats drove the final nail into the Lady Lions’ coffin by grinding out nine runs.
With the victory, Colorado City will advance to face the Sunray Lady Bobcats in the Area round, beginning Saturday in Littlefield. Game 1 of the best-of-three series will be played at 10 a.m. on May 8. Game 2 is scheduled for 4 p.m. A third game, if needed, will be played at 6 p.m.
The winner of the Colorado City-Sunray showdown will advance to face either Quanah or Ralls in the regional quarterfinals.
