UPDATE: WILDCATS BEAT CROSS PLAINS 15-7 IN FIRST GAME! SECOND GAME, 5-2! Way to go, Wildcats.
Jake Walters drove in three runs and Elishah Stark pounded out three hits on Friday and led the Westbrook High School Wildcats to a 17-3 victory over Midland Texas Leadership Charter Academy in the bi-district round of the Class 1A state baseball playoffs.
With the win, Westbrook improved to 9-3-2 for the season and, more importantly, earned a berth in the area round to face off against Cross Plains.
Texas Leadership Charter Academy held the upper hand early against the Wildcats. After Westbrook had scratched out a run in the top half of the first, TLCA rallied to take its only lead by pushing across two runs in the home half of the inning.
Westbrook erased all of Midland TLCA’s momentum in the second. The Wildcats pounded out seven runs in the frame and built an 8-2 advantage.
The Wildcats, who collected a playoff-record 19 hits in the win, stretched its lead to 13 runs in the fourth by pounding out seven more runs. They tacked on two more in the fifth to close out the victory.
Kenan Morris joined Walters and Stark in having a banner day for the Wildcats. The WHS senior outfielder went 3-for-5 from the plate and scored three runs. He also drove in a pair. Walters went 2-for-4 in the contest. Morris and Walters stole two bases apiece and accounted for more than half of the team’s seven steals.
Shammah Stark also did well at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a pair of runs batted in.
Stark dominated TLCA on the mound. He allowed just two runs while scattering three hits over the first four innings.
Westbrook will face off against Cross Plains in a best-of-three playoff series beginning at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 13, at Lake View High School in San Angelo. Game 2 is slated for 2 p.m. on Saturday. A decisive Game 3, if needed, will be played 30 minutes after the completion of the second game.
