Police: Suspect in Hailey Dunn case arrested in Big Spring

June 15, 2021

The latest break in the disappearance and death of a Colorado City teen Hailey Dunn took place on Monday, June 14, when Howard County law enforcement officers took Shawn Adkins into custody and charged him with murder in relation to the 2010 case.

Long considered a person of interest in the case, he is being held in Big Spring on a $2 million bond. A resident of Big Spring at the time of his arrest, Adkins was the boyfriend of Hailey’s mother, Billie, when she went missing.

A 13-year-old Colorado Middle School cheerleader, Dunn was reported missing in December 2010. In 2013, investigators found her remains near Lake J.B. Thomas in Scurry County.

Billie Dunn expressed relief in the arrest.

“I’m not surprised,” she told KTAN television via phone on Monday after the news of Adkins’ arrest. “I thank God that that person has been apprehended and will pay for what he did here on Earth.”
