County adopts lower effective tax rate
The Mitchell County Commissioners Court set an effective tax rate this week lower then in previous years.
Commissioners, who have been working through budget issues all week, adopted an effective rate of 0.571678 for the 2022 year. That rate, according to county records, is well below previous years.
“Last year, the total tax rate was 0.588539,” said County Tax Assessor Sylvia Clanton.
“It has been a busy week,” said Mitchell County Judge Mark Merrell. “But it’s been a good week. It (the effective tax rate) is down a little”.
The effective tax rate is a combination of the county’s Maintenance and Operation and Interest and sinking tax rates. The maintenance and operation tax was set at 0.419362, while the I&S rate was established at 0.052325. An additional 0.1000 (10 cents) road tax was also figured into the overall rate.
