Still time to register for jackpots at cookoff

August 11, 2021

Although the registration period for the 25th Annual Colorado City Volunteer Fire Department’s Boer Goat Cookoff, other teams are encouraged to get their registration forms for the jackpot entries filled out and turned in. The contest will be held Friday and Saturday, October 1 and 2, 2021.

Jackpot entries for teams (limit 15 teams) will be $150, which includes entry into all four jackpot categories. Those categories include ribs, brisket, beans and dessert. Others may enter jackpot events for $25 per category.

Twenty teams have registered for the goat cookoff. Half of a boer goat will be provided to each team at check-in on Friday from noon until 7 p.m. Contestants must cook and turn in the goat provided for judging, and all cooking must take place on site.

The best tasting, first place goat will bring in $1,500, plus three belt buckles. Lowe’s Grocery is sponsoring the prize money and Rowdy’s Backhoe Construction will be the buckle sponsor. Second place will win the team $750, sponsored by City National Bank and a third place receives $500 sponsored by Kiker-Seale. The fourth place team will bring in $250, compliments of local attorney Sterling Burleson, and fifth place will receive $125 sponsored by Ratliff Insurance.

All teams through 10th place will receive a plaque, sponsored by FirstBank and Trust. Special camp awards presented are: Ronnie Clark Best of Show, L.R. Webb’s Friendliest Camp, and Earnest Castillo Classiest Camp. These winners will also receive a plaque.

Other major contributors are Heady Auto Parts - $500, Attorney Ty Wood - $375, Ramage Appliance - $100, B & B One Stop - ice, Colorado City Record - advertising, KVMC/KAUM - advertising, Champion Septic Portapotties, City of Colorado City - use of park and dumpsters, Higginbotham-Bartlett - $250 and C-City Printing.

The local fire department and TDCJ cooks will have their own special contest for bragging rights. A special certificate will be awarded to the winning team for the friendly competition.

Contestants or any team members may begin setting up camp in the park on Wednesday, September 28. Each participant is asked to be courteous to fellow cooks.

All entries must be turned in on time according to the schedule of events. A siren will blow 10 minutes before entries are due. This is only a courtesy. Teams are responsible to be on time.

Team captains will be responsible for the cleanliness of their camp during and after the contest. Any space left in disarray or with loose trash will disqualify the team from any further participation.

If you would like a t-shirt, they must be pre-ordered.
