Scrimmages for area teams continue

August 18, 2021

All three area teams are preparing for their final pre-season games this weekend prior to their season openers next week.

The Wolves hosted Christoval last Friday night at Wolf Stadium in the annual “Our Day to Shine” event. Fans were charged $1 admission and all proceeds were donated to the Texas High School Coaches Education Foundation Benevolence Fund.

The games raised approximately $600 and Wolves Head Coach Dan Gainey would like to thank the fans for their contribution.

The Wolves continue to learn a new system on offense and defense and coaches are optimistic about the upcoming year. The Wolves travel to Merkel Thursday night for the final tune-up before their season opener August 27 against Albany at Wolf Stadium. Thursday scrimmage times are 6 p.m. for junior varsity and 7 p.m. for varsity.

Loraine High School head coach Jake Popham knew going into the Bulldogs’ first scrimmage last week that his young team would make some mistakes against Hermleigh. And they did. Making enough to enable Hermleigh scratch out a narrow 4-2 victory.

On the bright side, Popham said his team now knows what they have to improve on.

“We saw some good things and we saw some bad things,” said Popham. “We have some things we have to work to clean up. I’ve got some young guys that need to mature and step up.”

Josiah Lujan and Malaki Williams came up big for the Bulldogs in the scrimmage against the Cardinals. Both punched their way into the end zone for LHS.

Loraine will finish off its preseason schedule this Friday when they host Robert Lee at Johnson Field. The scrimmage will begin at 6 p.m.

The Bulldogs will open their 2021 season on Aug. 26 against Abilene Christian.

The Wildcats, returning several top players from last season’s outstanding year, scrimmaged Spur last week.

Head Coach Homer Matlock saw some good things to build on. “We did good things, but we definitely showed some areas that we need to improve. We have to get back to work and start improving in those areas,” Matlock said.

The Wildcats travel to Baird for a 6 p.m. scrimmage on Friday, Aug. 20. The Wildcats will face Motley County in the season opener Aug. 26 with kick-off at 6 p.m. in Spur.
