Let the playoff games begin!

February 17, 2021

There will be no shortage of playoff sportage this week for Mitchell County high school teams, assuming Mother Nature plays nice.

The Colorado High School and Westbrook High School boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will swing into postseason action later this week. The Colorado City and Westbrook girls will be competing in the area round of their respective classifications, while the CHS and WHS boys will be tipping off postseason play.

The Colorado City boys, fresh off a solid finish to the regular season that netted them third in the District 8-2A standings, are scheduled to open their playoff journey on Thursday against the Christoval Cougars. The two squads are slated to face off beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Central High School in San Angelo.

The Wolves roll into the postseason coming off big wins in three of their final four regular-season outings. Colorado finished the regular season with a 10-10 record.

Christoval, 19-4 overall, rolls into the contest as the No. 2 seed from the District 6-2A race. Wink edged out Christoval for the top spot in the district race.

The Westbrook boys, the District 14-A champions, will have a first-round bye this week.

The No. 14-ranked team in Class 1A in the final Texas Association of Basketball Coaches’ poll, Westbrook finished the regular season with an 18-3 record, including a perfect 11-0 run in district play.

Like many of the team across the state, the Colorado City Lady Wolves have struggled to get on the court during the record-breaking winter storm that blanketed much of the country last week. The Lady Wolves are scheduled to play Ozona in the first round of the girls’ state playoffs.

The winner will advance to face Sudan in the area round.

The Westbrook High School Lady ‘Cats will try and move another step closer to a regional tournament berth on Wednesday when they face off with Roby in the area round of the Class 2A playoffs.

Westbrook is 22-4 for the season and ranked No. 13 in the latest TABC girls’ poll.
