Local residents feel earthquake from 59 miles away

Social media was alive Monday evening with residents of Mitchell County feeling what they were assuming was an earthquake at approximately 8 p.m.

Come to find out, they were right.

A 4.5 magnitude earthquake was recorded by United State Geological Survey about 11 miles north of Stanton Monday evening.

It registered just after 7:55 p.m. and reached a depth of 4.8 miles.

Residents in Mitchell and Scurry Counties reported feeling the tremor for a few seconds. One citizen said, “it felt like some came up behind you and shook the chair you were sitting in.”

The Stanton area has experienced two earthquakes in the last seven days, 18 in the last 30 days and a total of 237 quakes in the past 365 days. This earthquake is the largest one in that area in the past 365 days.
